If a small child in her PJ’s expresses a friendly interest to play with the keys on a piano, proud parents enjoy the experience. But as the child grows older and continues to show a friendly interest in that piano, the parents begin to share what they know about how to play the piano. If the student continues to show a friendly interest, the parents will round up a teacher and begin piano lessons. It is not the teacher’s ability that drives the development.
It is the child’s desire to express a friendly interest that creates the growth of a good piano player. Greatness occurs when the friendly interest intensifies like the heat of a burning fire. The child that once banged on the piano keys while drooling down the front of their PJ’s has become a concert pianist as an adult…thanks to a burning desire.
As an adult we cannot imagine what great things a child could actually learn to do. Only the child can imagine that kind of outcome.
To learn how to desire more than what a person could imagine the ability to achieve, is the cruel trickery of greatness.
A fire can burn wildly in an unregulated way. The damage it produces can be devastating. To transform that unrestrained fire into a controlled burn will expose astonishing results. Only a burning desire can deliver the cinders of triumph. Control the burn.
An excuse to play the piano is far greater than an excuse to avoid the lessons. Desire is only an excuse. Design your excuse to perform something great. Excuse me, but I have a desire to practice writing now.
